The Financial Empowerment practice is dedicated to delivering comprehensive financial sector research, policy analysis, strategic guidance, programme redesign, and monitoring and evaluation services. With a strong focus on consumer protection, inclusion and literacy, we leverage insights from behavioural economics and transformative learning theories to help our clients enhance the effectiveness and impact of their financial literacy and inclusion programmes.
We also conduct research on African financial and capital markets, as well as financial market infrastructures and participants. Drawing on our experience in financial sector regulation, supervisory requirements, financial inclusion, and capital market developments, we offer unique insights that inform our clients’ decision-making processes. Through our diverse range of services, we help organisations make informed policy choices, develop impactful strategies, revamp programmes, and implement robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

Selected projects from our work in this area
- Providing support to many of South Africa’s prominent financial services firms in the design, review and assessment of their consumer financial education (CFE) programmes.
- The development of tools and dashboards for firms that implement CFE programmes, to better understand their effectiveness and improve the outcomes of these initiatives.
- Research to assess and better understand financial remittances in Southern Africa, most recently looking at the cost, access and reach of remittance services for migrants in South Africa for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Finmark Trust.
- Providing a consumer protection framework for the intra-SADC cross-border retail payment scheme, as part of a project for the SADC Banking Association, through Finmark Trust.
